Gum disease is perhaps the most common human disease. It can increase your risks of stroke and heart disease as well as disfigure your smile and cause you pain. And while treatment of gum disease can be successful, recurrence is a real problem, and even with success, teeth are left in a weakened state because of the bone loss.
Implants have a great track record of success. They are not susceptible to decay or root canal problems.
Is it time to abandon saving teeth and just place implants? The art of saving teeth seems to be becoming a lost one. Maybe it’s time to give it up altogether?
Dr. Arthur Neckritz is a periodontist and educator. We shared many cases over a 12 year period, with both implants and tooth saving procedures. In this episode we hear his views on problems you may be facing.

Going to another country to get dental or medical procedures done is becoming less rare. There are certainly many advertisement on the web about places where you can get dental implants, for example, and stay at a nice hotel all for a very low cost.
But what can we expect from this experience? How is the quality of care? What things do you need to consider before choosing to ditch your local Doctor and head to the airport?

No one wants unnecessary x-rays. It is good practice to take them only as often as necessary. But how often is that? And why are so many being taken if you have no pain or other problems? Is this just a way for the dentist to charge more?
Here is a brief overview of our take on the risk vs. benefits of dental x-rays.

Partial dentures are the unloved stepchild of dentistry. Patients often have problems with them and dentists dislike them. Yet they are made by the thousands every day.
Why is this procedure so problematic, and what can be done to make them better?
New Technology – 3D X-Ray
My goal is to stay on top of all of the latest dental trends and bring you the most advanced and useful technologies to make your dental visit quick and painless! The latest addition to my practice is the 3D X-ray. The images are so clear and will help you truly “see” your dental problems and understand any procedures you may need.
A 3D X-ray will rotate around your head as you sit in a chair. A typical scan will take around 30 seconds and capture a precision digital detail of your full jawbone, teeth and surrounding head and neck. This detailed view will reveal any dental issues and hidden health concerns. With this new scan you will receive:
• Improved dental implant planning and placement – no more touching the nerve
• Early identification of general dental issues
• A clear and accurate dental plan that you can easily understand
• Quick and easy scans – less than 1 minute from scan to image
• Reduced radiation – 95% reduction over traditional X-rays!
“A picture is worth a thousand words.” Schedule your appointment to get your true dental picture. For more information on this technology, contact our office or visit the Prexion website at www.prexion.com.

Often, when a crown is needed, the dentist will give you a list of types of crowns you can get: all gold, all metal, porcelain fused to gold, porcelain fused to nonprecious etc.
But what is best? what will last the longest? What looks the best?
Lisa and I discus all these issues and more, such as how long a crown should last and what you can do to make your investment last longer.

Everyone knows what a Dental Assistant Does right? She (usually) is the one who uses that sucker thing in your mouth. What kind of job is that? How boring.
Well actually, Dental Assisting is a very high tech multifaceted health care job. Where else in the health care field can you be an x-ray tech, patient advocate, surgical assistant, supply officer and many more things all in one office? Dentistry needs more highly trained Assistants. And everyone knows health care is a more secure area of the economy than most.
Listen to Jennifer beautifully describe why she chose Assisting, how she became one and what it means in our office.

Nobody looks forward to getting a tooth removed (unless it’s been keeping you up all night!), but it is a procedure most of us will face at some point. Here are some things you need to know to make the event easier, more painless and with fewer complications.
I discuss how to manage bleeding, dry sockets, pain medications and more.

Erosion. Few people know about it, not many dentists talk about it, yet it is destroying more and more teeth every year. Even if you have good hygiene, don’t eat excessive sweets and have a healthy diet it can be ruining your teeth, cutting notches along the gumline, causing sensitivity, even root canal problems.
In this episode I discuss the causes of erosion and what you can do to prevent it.
And don’t let me confuse you. I say on the audio that this is episode 19. It really is 20. And sorry the updates were delayed. I had a problem with iTunes downloading the more recent podcasts!

So let’s say you have, through good habits and good genetics, kept all your teeth, except for one. That unlucky tooth had an unsuccessful root canal treatment and had to be extracted. An implant has been suggested, but you are concerned about what it would be like to have the implant placed. What about a bridge? And why bother replacing the tooth anyway?
Previously we discussed using implants to support complete dentures. Listen in to part two of my little series on implants.
And don’t let me confuse you. I say on the audio that this is episode 18. It really is 19 for those of you keeping track.
018 – 3D X-Rays – Our Latest Hi Tech Tool to Improve Comfort and Diagnostic Accuracy
We have just invested in a radical advance in dental imaging – 3D XRays. We can now look 360 degrees around a tooth to examine it for bone disease, root canal problems, available bone for implant placement, fractures and more. We are one of the first general dental offices in the country to offer this to patients.
I had to make a video to show how extraordinary this is. An audio only program wouldn’t do it justice. In this short video, I try to show the difference between film x-rays (traditional), 2D digital x-rays (newer) and 3D.
I hope you can see just why I’m so excited about this technology!

Implants are often promoted in dental advertising, and they certainly revolutionized dentistry. One of the most common uses is for people who have complete dentures (no natural teeth). For these people, implants can greatly improve the retention of the denture. But they do something that is much more important. Here’s my take on this vital part of my practice!

Today we talk with Dr. Sean McDonnell, a Pediatric dentist about setting your child up for a lifetime of healthy teeth. Decay is unfortunately on the rise, and children often suffer the most from this disease. Dr. McDonnell specializes in the treatment of children. Listen to what he sees as the biggest threats to your child’s dental health today.
And perhaps even more important than this, is preventing the kind of experiences that lead to fear of the dentist. Those of us who know what that is like, know how it can keep you from getting regular preventive care. Then only when perhaps the tooth breaks or the pain is severe, will you seek treatment, and then it might be too late to save the tooth.
This all starts with those first visits when you were a child. Dr. Sean is fun. Hope you enjoy the episode!
